About me

I’m Rhiannon Lewis, and I currently live on an island off the coast of Maine with my human, feline, bovine, equine and caprine family. I work at a small animal hospital as a veterinary assistant while going to school to become a licensed veterinary technician. I love learning and helping our non-human friends lead healthy, content lives. As an animal owner, writer, educator, and veterinary professional in training, my goal is to share my inquiries and stories with others who are scientifically minded and always seeking the “why.”

Previously, I was an academic in the field of English literature; I have a PhD from Stanford University, where I studied and wrote about poets’ creative practices from antiquity to the present day. Alongside a 10 year career in nonprofit fundraising on both coasts, I also taught writing and literature courses at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.

I’ve spent most of my life learning from and living with horses and cats. I got certified as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL) through PATH International in 2019, and have both led and volunteered in equine-based therapy programs from California to Maine. In 2024 I bought my first heifer and quickly fell in love with cows—and one particular dairy goat—as I built our family’s small homestead.
